OAKLAND, CA – The California Environmental Voters (EnviroVoters) released the following statement in response to the Census Bureau’s announcement of the 2020 Apportionment Count. Based on the 2020 Census, California, despite adding 2 million new residents since the 2010 Census, is losing a House seat and Electoral College vote for the first time since its admission to the Union in 1850.

Statement from Mary Creasman, Chief Executive Officer, EnviroVoters:

“Representation must expand to match the needs that come with a growing population, and California losing a House seat shows the systemic challenges within this process. For a state like California, whose population continues to rise every single day, representation should not narrow, especially on the federal level. Regardless of that fact and the attempts from the Trump administration to subvert the Census, California will continue to model multi-racial, participatory, and open democracy and racially just representation with its independent redistricting process.

EnviroVoters is committed to good governance and environmental leadership as we engage in and promote California’s fair redistricting process based on the 2020 Census. Our local, state, and federal elected officials must properly reflect the populations and geographies they serve if leaders are going to implement the changes our communities most desperately need. Having a strong democracy is essential to solving the climate crisis and having adequate and reflective representation is critical to a strong democracy. The redistricting process in California needs to be intentional about overcoming the systemic inequality that plagues our country and protecting current and future generations from the impacts of climate change.”

California Environmental Voters (formerly the California League of Conservation Voters) believes the climate crisis is here and this moment requires transformative change. California has the policy solutions to stop climate change but lacks the political will to do it at the rate and scale that’s necessary. EnviroVoters exists to build the political power to solve the climate crisis, advance justice, and create a roadmap for global action. We organize voters, elect and train candidates, and hold lawmakers accountable for bold policy change. We won’t stop until we have resilient, healthy, thriving communities, and a democracy and economy that is just and sustainable for all.
